Families covered: Trollope of Bourne, Trollope of Casewick, Trollope (Troloppe) of Thornley

BP1934 (Trollope), which follows the Casewick line, reports "The family of Trollope is one of great antiquity, and is traced back in the family pedigree to John Trowlope, or Trolope, of Thornlaw, co. Durham, who acquired before 1390 the manor of Morden, in same co., by his marriage with the dau. and co-heiress of Thomas Lumley." BP1934 reports that "The senior line ... became impoverished by the part it took with the Catholic gentry in the North, in the Northumberland rising 1569, and was utterly ruined in the subsequent Civil War." Visitation starts with ...

BP1934 reports that "The 2nd branch, that of Bourne, in Lincolnshire, was established by John Trollope, a younger son of the Thornlaw family. He was s. by his son" (the William shown below). In a brief entry on 'Trollope of Bourne' in his 'Lincolnshire Pedigrees', A.R. Maddison reports that "The early part of the Trollope family has never been satisfactorily worked up" but suggests that the father of the John who is known to have been the ancestor of the Lincolnshire branch was a Thomas. It is therefore possible that John fits here (though it is unknown who his mother was) although this must be viewed not only as wholly speculative but also as probably unlikely given that Maddison did not make the connection, which he may have been expected to have done had it been the case.
