Families covered: Veteriponte of Carriden, Vipont (Veteripont) of Appleby, Veteriponte of Langton, Vipont of Westmorland
'History and Antiquities' reports that this family descended "of a family in Normandy (de Veteri Ponte) lords of Curvaville". 'The House of Cockburn' (p18) reports that "Poyntz, the Norman (was apparently) the ancestor of this distinguished race, who took name from the Lordship of Vieuxpont-en-Auge, near Caen", was "" and that "two of that name (were) companions of the conqueror (at) the Battle of Hastings", Robert de Vieuxpont and William de Vieuxpont. The latter, "who saved the life of William Malet on that 14th of October 1066 (is) presumed to have been the ancestor of the Scottish branch, and Robert of the Lords of Appleby". William de Vieuxpont is shown in the lower section. His contemporary Robert is possibly the following Robert who is shown by various web sites as grandfather of the William who married Maud de Moreville. We have resisted the temptation of showing a speculative connection between Robert & William but it is not unlikely that they were closely connected. | |||||||||||||||
