(1) Visitation uses Cliff or Cliffe or Clyffe as the family name. We keep to Clive. (2) Ormerod (Cheshire, vol 3, 'Clive', p115) suggests that this family descended from Warin de Clive (a c1216) "said to be a younger son of Lidulph de Twemlow" who assumed the name Clive from the township of that name. BP1934 reports that "The family of Clive, which assumed its name from the manor of Clive or Clyve, has been settled in Shropshire since the reign of Henry II" (who r. 1154-1189). BP1934 also reports that the Richard who married Margaret Corbet was "12th in descent from Henry de Clive, of Clive" but makes no mention of that Warin.
