Families covered: Clive of Clive, Clive of Huxley, Clive of Styche, Clive of Walford, Clive (Cliffe) of Whitfield, Clive of Wormbridge

Ormerod (Cheshire, vol III, p115) suggests that this family descended from Warin de Clive. However, BP1934 starts with the Richard who married Margaret Corbet, and describes him as "12th in descent from Henry de Clive, of Clive", which would too many generations to support that connection. Provisionally, we follow BP1934 and, with input from Visitation, start with Henry de Clive. Visitation uses Cliff or Cliffe or Clyffe as the family name. We keep to Clive.

BP1934 (and BP2003) shows Robert's wife as Mary, dau of Sir E. Abyn. In Collins (1812, Clive, Earl of Powis), Sir Egerton Brydges identifies her as Mary, dau of Sir Edward Abyn. However, BEB1841 (Alleyne of Hatfield) identifies the following Mary Alleyne as married to Robert Clive of Styche and we have been advised by a contributor (MF, 20.11.10) that this is confirmed in Visitation (Salop (Shropshire), 1663).
