Families covered: Smyth of Braco, Smythe of Methven, Smith of Rapness
(1) Commoners reports the tradition that this family "owes its origin to the Clan Chatan, being descended, it is asserted, from Neil Cromb, third son of Murdoch, of that clan, who flourished in the time of William the Lion" (who r. 1165-1214). (2) Commoners spells the name "Smith" until later generations when it uses "Smythe". We mainly follow BLG1952 which uses "Smyth" then "Smythe". |

David's wives are as reported in the source used for information on the Bruce's of Cultamalundy. Whilst TCB (vol 4, 'Thriepland or Threipland') identifies Katherine's mother as Barbara, dau of Alexander Bruce of Cultmalindy, the dates make it seem more likely that she was a generation later (i.e. dau of Alexander's son George). As she was the eldest daughter, all of the daughters must have been of David's 2nd marriage. | |||||||||||||||
