  John is the first mentioned by 'East Neuk' which identifies him as "brother of the laird of Dumbarnie".

'East Neuk' is slightly confusing at this point, reporting that John d 1765 before mentioning the marriage to Christian Smith in a manner that would normally indicate that Christian's husband was this John's son John. However, the dates suggest that Christian was 2nd wife of this John whose 1st wife possibly died at the birth of David.
