Families covered: Walsh (Brenagh) of Castle Hoel, Walsh of Shancahir
BLGI1912 starts its article on this family as follows: "The first members of this family to settle in Ireland were Philip, David and Geoffrey Walsh, nephews of Rees ap Griffith, Prince of South Wales. They accompanied their uncle Robert FitzStephen who was one of the thirty-three knights who followed the leadership of Richard Strongbow, Earl of Pembroke, in his invasion of Ireland in 1170." It is presumptuous (but seems not unreasonable) that we start with the following Stephen and show one of his sons as married to a sister of Rees ap Griffith. Other possibilities include that the relationship with Rees ap Griffith came through his wife rather than one of his siblings and that Robert FitzStephen was maternal rather than paternal uncle of the 3 brothers who went with him to Ireland. We assume that 'Walsh' simply means 'Welshman' or 'from Wales'. | |||||||||||||||
