(1) Commoners reports that "The Wesbys were originally from Yorkshire, but had a settlement in Lancashire prior to the conquest, and are of Saxon descent."MGH (NS1, vol 1 (1874), 'Westby of co. York', p445+) makes a very similar comment and then goes on to provide a 19 generation pedigree with many connections to significant families that looks intriguing until one realises that there are no dates and none of the connections appear in the other families. We have ignored it but note the matter here in case it becomes relevant in the future. (2) Commoners starts with a William Westbie of Wesbie (Yorkshire), a temp Henry VII (who r. 1485-1509),and shows him as father of William of Westbie (a 1553, m. dau of Regmaiden of Wideacre) father of John of Westbye (m. Ellyn Kirby) father of Thomas of Mouldbury or Mowbreck (m. Perpetua Norris & Elizabeth Preston). Provisionally, we follow Richard St. George's Visitation (Lancashire, 1613) as follows: |

Commoners (vol 1, Westby of Mowbreck and Rawcliffe) identifies this Thomas as having settled at Clonmel "and hence sprang, it is presumed, a large and highly respectable family, seated in the county of Tipperary."
