(1) Commoners reports that "The Wesbys were originally from Yorkshire, but had a settlement in Lancashire prior to the conquest, and are of Saxon descent."MGH (NS1, vol 1 (1874), 'Westby of co. York', p445+) makes a very similar comment and then goes on to provide a 19 generation pedigree with many connections to significant families that looks intriguing until one realises that there are no dates and none of the connections appear in the other families. We have ignored it but note the matter here in case it becomes relevant in the future.
(2) Commoners starts with a William Westbie of Wesbie (Yorkshire), a temp Henry VII (who r. 1485-1509),and shows him as father of William of Westbie (a 1553, m. dau of Regmaiden of Wideacre) father of John of Westbye (m. Ellyn Kirby) father of Thomas of Mouldbury or Mowbreck (m. Perpetua Norris & Elizabeth Preston). Provisionally, we follow Richard St. George's Visitation (Lancashire, 1613) as follows:
William Westby of Westby, Yorkshire
1. John Westbye (a 1567)
m. Ellyn Kirby (dau of _ Kirby of Rawcliffe)

  (A) Thomas Westby of Burne (b 1641, d c1649, eldest son)
m1. (1661) Bridget Clifton (dau of Thomas Clifton of Westby & Lytham)
Commoners is not clear which wife was mother of Thomas's children but notes that, apart from John & Robert, he had other issue who d unm. Dudgale mentions only his marriage to Bridget with 2 sons by 1664, John & Thomas. We (provisionally) assume that all of Thomas's children were by ...

m2. Elizabeth Preston (dau of Thomas Preston of Holkar)
This marriage is not mentioned either in St. George's Visitation or in Dugdale's 'Westby of Mirescough' but is in Commoners and in Dugdale's 'Westby of Rawcliffe'. He is the first mentioned in the latter which, whilst confirming him as of Molbreck (and d 1643), suggests that his first marriage was sp even though he is shown in 'Westby of Rawcliffe' as having had children.
  (8) George Westby of Rawcliffe (Major)
m1. (c1650) Margaret Hesketh (dau of Thomas Hesketh of Mayne)

The following comes from Commoners (vol 3, Westby of Thornhill), supported by BLG1886 (Westby of Roebuck Castle), which picks up on that presumption and notes that "he is supposed ... to have left the following issue".
