1. Sir John Balfour, Sheriff of Fife (dvp 1460)
  A. Sir Michael Balfour of Munquhanny & Strathor the first mentioned by BLG1952
There is some confusion as to whether it was this Michael or his son who died at Flodden. Denmylne suggests that it was this Michael. BLG1858 & BLG1952 suggest that it was his son.
  m. Janet Ogilvy (dau of Sir Andrew Ogilvy of Inchmartin)
  i. Michael Balfour, 1st of Munquhanny (d Flodden 09.09.1513?)
Michael is sometimes shown as '1st of Munquhanny' even though the lands had been in his family for several generations before him. This is because he erected his lands into a barony.

Denmylne (#12.II) reports that Gilbert had issue and "see the Balfours of Westray and Trenabie". Denmylne (#14) mentions that the above Sir Michael, 3rd Baron of Munquhanny, acquired Westray from Sir Gilbert's son Archibald. Denmylne ('The Balfours of Westray and Trenabie') mentions that Noltland Castle passed, after Archibald, to a grandson of Sir Gilbert.

  (B) ?? Balfour
  (i) ?? Balfour
  (3) Sir James Balfour of Pittendreich & Burleigh (b c1525, d 1583/4, President of the Court of Session)
Some sources identify Sir James as son (rather than grandson) of Michael, 1st of Munquhanny, possibly because TSP, which focuses on his wife's parentage, does so, this possibly resulting from the above-mentioned confusion as to which generation of Michaels was killed at Flodden.
