1. Sir John Smith of Cressing Temple (d 1547, baron of the exchequer)
Visitation shows only 2 sons for Sir John: Thomas and Francis & Thomas, with Thomas as son by a Wood (co)heiress and Francis as son by Agnes Harewell. BLG1952 (Smith-Dorien-Smith of Tresco Abbey) reports only William & Francis with only one wife, Agnes Harwell. BLG1952 (Nevill of Kewland Hall formerly of Nevill Holt) identifies Thomas as the 2nd son of Sir John but does not name his mother. Thanks to a contributor (DS, 27.02.12) for drawing our attention to HoP where the information given on his sons Edmund & Francis identifies their mothers (and wives) and reports that John's eldest son Edward appointed his brothers Thomas & Edward as his executors, leading us to presume that they were full rather than half-brothers.

  D. Francis Smith of Ashby Folville & Wooton Waven, Sheriff of Leicestershire (b by 1516, d 03.09.1606, MP) "1st. s." of this marriage
BLG1952 (Smith-Dorien-Smith of Tresco Abbey) identifies a son Francis as Sheriff of Leicestershire (suggesting that he was younger than William) but, surprisingly, does not indicate that he was ancestor of the Viscounts Carrington. However, this connection is confirmed by both BE1883 and Visitation (section 1) which shows Francis as married to ...
