[Almost all of the basic data below were previously included within BZmisc06 in 2 sections, one uploaded on 12.01.06, the other on 13.04.16. They were moved to this page following the review & reworking of the first (earlier) section using HoP (and T&G) that led to that first section being split into 2, now shown as the upper and middle sections below. What had been the second (later) section on BZmisc06 is now shown as the lower section below.]
| (1) HoP ('John Burley of Broncroft'), which may be seen here, throws into doubt the traditional pedigrees given for the following family, which we broadly followed before our review, that were based on the Visitation and confused a bit by Commoners. It notes that "It is unlikely that he was the John, 4th or 5th s. of Sir John Burley KG, of Burley, Herefs., bro. of Sir Richard Burley KG (d.1387), and nephew of the famous Sir Simon Burley KG, who was executed by the Lords Appellant in 1388 ... . Nor should he be confused with Sir Simon's great-nephew and heir, who, ... . That John Burley came of age in 1404 and died in 1428, leaving a young son, William, as heir to Birley". (2) The Harleian edition of the Visitation used for this page shows the information on the Burley family within its article on the Hopton family and in italics, suggesting that it was added by the Harleian editor. The Commoners article focuses on the Gatacre family and the T&G pedigree on the Burleys is shown within an article on the Thynne family, the connection coming through the Gatacre & Heynes families. Hence, not one of the editors of the main sources we used for this section had the Burleys as their main focus. Much of Commoners's note on the family concerns the above-mentioned Sir Simon KG (executed 1388). Commoners appears to have confused the generations, identifying Simon's unnamed father with his brother, Sir John. (3) Note that HoP identifies the seat of the MPs as Broncroft in Corvedale, Salop. Visitation does not identify any seat/location for the main line of the family but T&G & Commoners mention Bromcroft Castle, Salop. We have seen cross-refererences to the family using 'Bromcroft', 'Bromcroft Castle', 'Broomscroft Castle' and 'Bromsgrove'. Googling 'Bromcroft Castle' leads to 'Broncroft Castle'. |

| Visitation identifies the parents of Elizabeth & Johanna, whom we now show in the middle section below, as Sir John and Alice, dau of Richard, Lord Gray of Wilton. Commoners names their father William but does not name their mother. T&G, which othewise follows Visitation, names their mother as Juliana, dau of Reginald, Lord Grey of Ruthin. We suspect that that is because T&G had found that their mother was indeed called Juliana (see below) and, following Visitation's lead in showing her as a daughter of a Lord Gray, maintained that connection albeit as a generation later. | |||||||||||||||
