(1) Crawfurd reports that, according to "the famous Antiquary Sir George Mackenzie", this family descended from Schiach, a son of MacDuff, Earl of Fife. If by this he meant MacDuff, son of King Dubh, such should not be taken seriously as that MacDuff almost certainly never existed (see 'Alpin1'). If he meant Shaw or Sheagh, son of Duncan, one of the Earls of Fife who are sometimes called MacDuff', then this too should not be taken too seriously since the existence of that Shaw, sometimes identified as progenitor of Clan Mackintosh, is also questioned.
(2) The earliest recorded probably-definite ancestor of this family is thought to be Reginald, whose son John donated some lands "to the Monks of Pasly" in 1284. The earliest 'connected' ancestor appears to be ...
