Families covered: Charlton (Charleton) of Apley (Appley) Castle, Cherlton of Powys (Powis), Charleton of Terne

Sir John or Alan de Cherlton of Apley or Appley Castle, Salop
(1) BE1883 and BP1934 (Meyrick) name the progenitor of this family as John. Commoners and Visitation name him Alan. TCP names the father of John, 1st Lord Cherleton of Powis, as Robert. We are concerned that the connection between the families of Apley and Powys is wrong and intend to investigate it further in due course.
(2) BE1883, which provides data on the Lords of Powys, and BP1934, which reports on the Charltons of Apley Castle, disagree inasmuch that both report that the ancestor of their line was the younger of Sir John's two sons. Visitation shows Alan, Thomas then John. We follow BE1883 by showing Apley Castle being inherited by the elder/eldest son.
1. Sir Alan de Charlton of Apley Castle, Governor of Montgomery and Wigmore Castles (d 12.1360)
m1/2. (before 11.1318) Ellen la Zouche (b c1286, a 10.1334, dau of Alan la Zouche, 1st Lord of Ashby)
m2/1. Margery (dau of Hugh FitzAer son of Ayer of Witiford or Witheford)
Commoners mentions only Alan's marriage to Ellen, dau/co-heir of Lord Zouch (widow of Nicholas, Lord St. Maur), but BP1934 (Meyrick) & Visitation mention only his marriage to Margery, dau of Hugh FitzAer. BP1934 does not name any wife. TCP (St. Maur) reports that Lord St. Maur's widow married Sir Alan de Cherleton of Apley before 11.1318. We assume that Sir Alan married both ladies but are not sure which was mother of ...

  m. (1309) Hawys Gadarn '(the hardy') (b 1291, d before 1353, dau of Owen de la Pole, Prince of Powys-Wenwynwyn, by Johanna, dau of Sir Robert Corbet of Moreton Corbet)
TCP and BE1883 disagree over the Lords of Powys (Powis). BE1883 shows John & H\wys's elder son as John (2nd Lord, d 1374, m. Joan Stafford) father of John (3rd Lord, dsp 1400, m. Maud Mortimer) brother of Edward (4th Lord, d 1422, m. Alianore Holland). TCP shows as follows:
  A. John de Cherlton, 2nd Lord of Powys (d before 13.08.1360)
  m. (before 13.04.1319) Maud Mortimer (a 08.1345, dau of Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March, by Joan de Joinville)
i. John de Cherlton, 3rd Lord of Powys (b c1334, d 13.07.1374)

  m. (before 03.1392) Alice FitzAlan (dau of Richard FitzAlan, Earl of Arundel, by Elizabeth de Bohun)
  b. Edward de Cherlton, 5th Lord of Powys (b c1371, d 14.03.1420/1)
m1. (06.1399) Eleanor Holand (d 23.10.1405, widow of Roger Mortimer, dau of Thomas Holand, 2nd Earl of Kent, by Alice FitzAlan)
  (1) Joane Cherlton (b c1400)
  m. Sir John Grey, 1st Count of Tankerville (d c1422)
Their grandson obtained the title 'Lord of Powis' when the Tankerville lands in France were lost.
  (2) Joyce Cherlton (b c1423)
  m. Sir John de Tiptoft, 1st Lord (of Powys) (d 1443, Chief Butler)
m2. (before 1408) Elizabeth Berkeley (d 1478, dau of Sir John Berkeley of Beverstone, by Elizabeth Betteshorne)
  B. Isabel de Cherlton (d 10.04.1397)
Isabel is not reported in BE1883 or Visitation but is mentioned in Commoners as sister rather than daughter of John, Lord Cherleton. We follow BP1934 (Dudley), which identifies her as daughter of Lord John, because we believe that the dates make that more likely.
m1. John de Sutton, Lord of Dudley (d 1359)
  m2. Sir Richard le Fisher

m. Anne Charlton (dau of Thomas Charlton of Apley Castle) @@ above

  m. Elizabeth Franceis (dau of Adam Francis, son of Adam of London)
For the next 2 generations we follow Visitation (Charleton of Apley Castle and Withiford), which was based on "Harl. 1396, fo.64" but Visitation (Charleton of Apley Castle), which was based on "Harl. 1241, fol. 51", shows Thomas's son Robert as married to Anne Manwaringe (of Ightfeeld) and father of Richard who married Alice Corbet. Commoners, which we do not follow, shows Sir Alan Charlton, shown above as Governor of Montgomery & Wigmore Castles, as father of Thomas father of Thomas father of the following Robert.
  A. Robert Charlton or Charleton of Apley Castle, Sheriff of Salop (d 1473)
  m. Maria Corbet (dau of Robert Corbet of Morton)
  i. Richard Charlton or Charleton of Apley Castle (d 1522-3)
Visitation shows Richard's wife as Anne Manwaring (dau of William), mother of William. Commoners reports that this Richard married twice, the first wife unnamed (but reported to have been the mother of his successor William) the second wife being a daughter of Mainwaring of Peover, mother of Richard of Tearne (father of Robert, father of Robert who married Alice Tyler). We follow Visitation in identifying Richard of Tearne as a generation later but note that uncertainty has been raised by Commoners as to who was mother of ...
