Families covered: Lundie (or Lundin) of Balgonie, Lundie of Conland, Lundin of Drum [This family is to be investigated further in due course.]

There are discrepancies between the various sources used to develop the information shown here. Whist trying not to lose too much of the basic data they provide, we have tried to make a reasonably clear family tree but have found that to make it any clearer would require us to make assumptions that we are not prepared to make at this time. Following the lead of the author/editor of our Main Source, we have compromised and shown a tree that contains some alternatives. The following is therefore 'subject to review'. Note that we have not tried to be consistent with the family name but move freely between Lundin and Lundie as the names seem to have been used almost interchangeably.
Sir Robert Lundie of Balgonie
m. Elizabeth or Helen Sibbald (dau/heir of Sir Andrew Sibbald of Balgonie, Sheriff of Fife)
1. Sir Robert Lundie of Balgonie (d 1502, Treasurer of Scotland)
Some combine this Robert with 'his father', reporting that it was the Treasurer Robert who married Elizabeth/Helen Sibbald. We are close to agreeing with this not least because 'Fife (P&H, vol 2, p69)', reports how others (in particular Crauford, following Sir Robert Sibbald) have made an error and says that "It can be conclusively shown that Elizabeth Sibbald was the wife, not the mother, of Sir Robert the Lord High Treasurer, and that their eldest son, Sir Andrew ...". We await further confirmation of the identity of his other wives, if any, and attribution of his siblings/children before making a change.
m1. Jean Lindsay (possibly dau/niece of Patrick Lindsay, 4th Lord of the Byres)
  A. Sir Andrew Lundie of Carnbo, later of Balgonie, Sheriff of Fife (d 07.1513/9)
  m1. Katherine Seton
  i. Margaret Lundie
  m. (before 1509) David Ramsay of Colluthie
  m2. Janet Dishington
Not known which wife was the mother of ...
ii. James Lundie of Balgonie (d c1536)
  partner unknown
  a. Katherine Lundie
  m. Henry Wardlaw, younger of Tory
Some sources report that the next Robert was son or cousin of his predecessor James rather than his brother.
  iii. Robert Lundie of Balgonie
  m. Margaret Lumisden (dau of Thomas Lumisden of Conland)
The information hereafter is uncertain. As indicated above and below, there are different views on how this family develops. We have broadly followed the connections reported to have been determined by Graham Welsh not least because they seem to make best sense of the dates of the different generations. However, some questioning factors remain including the reference in TSP (Oliphant) to Lillias Oliphant's husband as being 'of Balgonie'. However, it is accepted that even junior members of a landed family are sometimes referred to as being 'of' tbe relevant estate even though this can cause confusion.
  a. Sir Andrew Lundin of Conland and Balgonie
  m1. Janet Sibbald (d c1549)
m2. (c1550) Janet Lindsay (of Dowhill family)
Uncertain which wife was mother of the following Robert. Note that some sources suggest that David 'of Balgonie', who married Lillias Oliphant and who is shown below as a brother of the following Robert, was in fact Robert's father.
  (1) Robert Lundin of Balgonie (d c1598)
This Robert is not included by Graham Welsh who shows the following Robert as son of the above Andrew.
  (A) Robert Lundin of Balgonie (d 1624/5)
m(1). Janet Bethune (dau of James Bethune of Belfarge)
m(2). Jane Lindsay (dau of James Lindsay, 7th Lord of the Byres)
m(3). Margaret Boswell (possibly dau of David Boswell of Balmuto)
  m(4). Euphemia Durie
Welsh reports this Robert as having married several times (as above) albeit not necessarily in this order. If this Robert's father was another Robert (as we show) then it is perhaps likely that one of these whom Welsh reports as wife of this Robert was in fact his mother.
At this stage we must offer alternative descents which differ so much that it looks as though the sources are looking at different families! According to our Main Source, Welsh reports that Robert had the following children (unknown by which wife).
  (i) William Lundin of Balgonie (d 1630)
  m. (14.12.1613) Janet Scott
  (a) William Lundin of Balgonie (sold Balgonie in 1640)
  (b) David Lundin (b 08.09.1662)
  (ii) Eupham Lundin
  m. George Lundin in Saltgreen
  (iii) David Lundin of Conland
  m. _ Wemyss (d 20.05.1653)
  (iv) daughter
  m. James Wemyss of Balfarge
  (v) James Lundin in Saltgreen (d 12.08.1664)
Dr. Lundie Smith offers the following alternative, all being Robert's children by Jane Lindsay.
  (i) Robert Lundin, last of Balgonie
(ii) John Lundie of Easter Conland (dsp 04.1641)
  m. (mcrt 31.12.1630) Janet Wemyss (dau of Sir James Wemyss of Bogie, of family of Wemyss)
  (iii) David Lundie (a 05.1630)
  (B) Agnes Lundie (d 11.1613)
  m. Sir William Graham, 4th of Claverhouse (d 1641/2)
  (C)+ other issue
b. James Lundin (d Pinkie 1547)
  c. Robert Lundin
  m. Janet Bethune (dau of John Bethune)
  d. William Lundin in Craill (a 1594)
  e. Elizabeth Lundie (d before 10.06.1601)
  m1. George Halket of Pitferran
m2. William Lundie of that ilk (d 06.05.1600)
  f. David Lundie 'of Balgonie' (d 1586)
  m. (mcrt 04.1561) Lillias Olpihant (d before 07.09.1588, dau of Laurence Oliphant, 3rd Lord)
Various sources presume that one of the sons of this David was the Robert of Balgonie who is shown above as having died in about 1624.
  (1)+ 5 sons and 4 daughters
Possibly one of these sons was the following Andrew who is identified by Alexander Nisbet (referred to under Main Sources below) as the same as the Andrew Lundie who was son of Robert Lundie and Margaret Lumisden. He must have been close to the family of Balgonie if not of the family.
  Andrew Lundie (of Conland ?) (d 1603)
  m. Elizabeth Brown (dau of laird of Fordel)
  (A) David Lundie of Drum
  m. Elizabeth Paterson (dau of George Paterson of Dunmore family)
  (i) George Lundie of Drum
  m. Isabel Arnot (dau of Sir Michael Arnot of that ilk, Bart)
  (a) John Lundie (d young)
  (b) Michael Lundie of Drum
  m. Sophia Lundin (dau of James Lundin of Drum)

  (c) David Lundie (captain)

  F. Elizabeth Lundie --
m1. Sir John Lindsay of Pitcruvie, Master of Lindsay (dvp 1525) --
m2. David Lundie, later of Berriehill
  G. daughter possibly of this generation --
  m. Robert Aytoun of Inchdairney (a 1516, 1539) --
m2. (c1500) Elizabeth Stewart (dau of Alexander Stewart of Garlies)

Main source(s): 'The most ancient Family of Lundin or Lundie of that ilk. A History' compiled by Dr. Robert Lundie Smith with cross-reference support from TSP, etc.. The book takes much information from (inter alia) Dr. Lundie Smith's own searches of retours, from 'Lundins of Fife' by Graham T. Welsh, and from 'A system of heraldry ...' by Alexander Nisbet. As mentioned above, these sources produce different results for this branch of the family
