It appears that, even though in later years, or at least for its branches outside of Devon, this family's name became Cullum, it started (and remained many years) in Devon as Culme. This provides an interesting example of how a name changed over the years, possibly simply because the accent of one part of the country was misinterpreted in another part of the country. Wotton spells the family name throughout as Cullum.

1. John Culme of Winkleigh (Winkley)

  m. Patience Wheeler
  (i) Philip Cullum
Wotton identifies Philip as ancestor of Sir Thomas Cullum, 1st Bart (see below). However, given that TCB reports that Sir Thomas (b c1587) was son of John son of John, the dates make this impossible. Wotton reports that "This family were originally seated at Winkley in Devonshire" and goes on to show the same early generations as are shown above but does not complete connection to the Baronets of Haftede (Hawsted). Instead, Wotton provides the ancestry of Philip, son of Benjamin, and then identifies the Thomas, 1st Bart, as "lineal descendant of Philip, aforesaid". Debrett's reports that "This family was seated at Thorndon, co. Suffolk, at least as early as the fifteenth century, as appears by the will of Walter Cullum, proved 4 Oct. 1454". Visitation (London), Debrett & TCB all report that the grandfather of Sir Thomas was ...
