Families covered: Throckmorton of Coughton, Throckmorton of Throckmorton (Throgmorton of Throgmorton), Throckmorton of Tortworth

(1) BEB1841 reports that the family took its name from "Throckemertona, Throckmorton, or the Rockmoor Town" in the vale of Evesham, Worcestershire. John (de) Throckmorton was lord of the manor c1130 which, according to BEB1841, "leaves little room to doubt that the family possessed it, at the entrance of the Normans, or long before, the etymology of the name being either British or Saxon".
(2) Both BP1934 & BEB1841 spell the family name "Throckmorton". Visitation and various cross-references from elsewhere in the database sometimes spell it "Throgmorton". We view the spellings as effectively inter-changeable in the past but "Throckmorton" as probably more popular nowadays.

There is some uncertainty with these early generations. The above comes from Visitation. The husband of the Abberbury heiress is the first mentioned by BEB1841, which names him John. Visitation names him Thomas father of Thomas, the husband of Elinor "Da. & hey. of Guido Spineo". BEB1841 identifies the latter's husband as John which is supported by BP1934 (which starts with him). We are following BEB1841 which shows another generation between those husbands.
