William Knox of Silvyland
m. heiress of Silvyland
There appears to be some confusion as to the successive lairds of Silvyland and to the connection to this family of Knox of Dungannon, etc., ancestors of the Earls of Ranfurly. BP1870 (Ranfurly) shows the following succession & connection which we presume has since been found wanting by further research given that (1) BP1934 (Ranfurly) appears to have identified the father of Thomas Knox (who married Elizabeth Spang) as a different Marcus Knox and (2) BIFR1976 shows the connection coming through an earlier generation. We show the connection provided by BP1870 because it may prove useful in the future but report it in italics to show that we suspect that it is at least partly wrong.
1. William Knox of Silvyland
  m. Margaret Fleming (dau of Patrick Fleming of Barrochan (Barrochar))
  A. William Knox of Silvyland
  m. (c1601) Margaret Maxwell (d 16.11.1622, dau of George Maxwell of Newark, widow of Uchtred Know of Ranfurlie)
MGC (vol 2, p279) confirms that the widow of Uchtred Knox of Ranfurlie married a William Knox of Silvieland, "a near relation" of Uchtred.
  i. Mark Knox in Glasgow
  m. Isobel Lyon (dau of Archibald Lyon, younger son of Lord Glamis)
a. Thomas Knox
  m. Elizabeth Spang (dau of "a Danish gentleman, who came over to Scotland in the train of Queen Anne of Denmark")
BP1870 shows the same children for this Thomas and Elizabeth as does BP1934, which we report below.

BP1930 (Ranfurly) reports that the father of both John Knox, Mayor of Dublin, and William Knox of Castlereagh was William Knox of Glasgow, son of Marcus Knox of Glasgow. It reports that William's first wife, and mother of John & William, was Margaret Greenless (married after 16.11.1584-5, she died 22.07.1604). BP1930 does not gives birth or death dates for this William.
