Families covered: Maitland of Gight, Maitland of Lethington, Maitland of Netherdale, Maitland of Thirlestane

TSP reports that it has been suggested that this family originated from Italy but that Sir Robert Douglas, the renowned genealogist, suggested that they "more probably came from France".   (1) Temple, who focuses on the Pitrichie line, contradicts the information given by TSP on Robert's younger sons.
* TSP mentions 3 younger sons: William of Ormiston, Robert, and Alexander of Pencateland.
* Temple mentions 2 younger sons: William of Auchincruive etc. (ancestor of the Maitlands of Pitrichie) and James of Netherdale. Temple reports on the descendants of both but indicates that there may be a generation between each and his next named succeessor.
(2) The following is a speculative combination of the information provided by these 2 sources.
  (2) William Maitland of Ormiston (a 1361) mentioned by both TSP & Temple
TSP identifies William's wife as Isabella (a 1362). Temple identifies her as a daughter of Ogistoun of that ilk.
  m. Isabella Ogistoun?
TSP reports that William had a son Thomas with descent as shown below. Temple, who shows William as ancestor of the Maitlands of Pitrichie, does not mention Thomas but reports that the "next on record" for Pitrichie after William was Patrick (a 1454), probably William's grandson.
  (A) Thomas Maitland or Mautalent de Halsynton & Ormiston
  m. Marion or Margaret
  (i) William Maitland or Mautalent (a 1395)
  m. Elizabeth Watson (dau of William Watson)
  (B) ?? Maitland (d 1454?)
  (i) Patrick Maitland of Pitrichie (d 1514)
  m. _ Vaus (dau of _ Vaus of Menie)
  (3) James Maitland or Matulant of Natyrdul (Netherdale) (a 1369) generation given by Temple but omitted by TSP
Temple reports that the "next to be found of Natyrdul is" ...
  (A) Robert Maitland or Matulant of Natyrdul (Netherdale) (a 1435)
  m. ?? (heiress of Schivas & Gight)
TSP reports that "Various families are said to have sprung from (Robert); notably the Maitlands of Gight, of Auchencrieff, and of Pittrichie" but provides no further detail on his offspring. Temple provides the following which contradicts TSP only inasmuch as it excludes the line of Pittrichie (Pitrichie) (and Auchencrieff?) which he shows rooted as just above.
  (i) Sir Patrick Maitland of Netherdale, Gight, Schivas, etc. (a 1460, d 1467?)
  m. Margaret Innes (dau of Water Innes of that ilk by Euphame Fraser of Lovat)
  (a) Elizabeth Maitland
  m. _ Annand of Auchterellon
  (b) Janet Maitland (d 1539)
  m. (1490) Thomas (not George) Baird of Ordinhivas
  (ii) Elizabeth Maitland
  m. John Gordon of Essie or Scurdargue
  (4) Alexander Maitland or Mautalent of Pencateland mentioned by TSP but not by Temple
  b. son (d Neville's Cross (Durham) 13.10.1346)
  ii.+ 2 other sons (dvp)

Main source(s): TSP ('Lauderdale)', BP1934 ('Lauderdale') with a little input/support/contradiction for the early generations from 'The Thanage of Fermartyn' (by Rev. Temple, used for the Pittrichie line on Maitland05)
