## BLG1886 & BLGI1912 identify James as ancestor of Lord Monteagle but his brother Dominick as ancestor of Sir Stephen of Mount Rice. However (with thanks to a regular contributor (CV, 06.11.15) for bringing this to our attention), Lodge (vol 3, 'St. Lawrence, Earl of Howth', p203+) provides the following which shows Sir Stephen as James's son.

Lodge suggests that James's 3rd son Thomas d unm 14.12.1723. However, this appears to be the Thomas who is the first mentioned by BP1934 ('Monteagle'). TCP ('Monteagle of Brandon') starts with his son Stephen, and reports that Thomas, 1st Lord, "is said to have been of the same family as Sir Stephen Rice, Chief Baron of the Exchequer [I.}, who d. in 1715, but whether he was actually descended from him does not appear in the printed pedigree. Yet it is presumably in this belief that the title was chosen on the ground that an incomplete patent of a barony of Monteagle in favour of the Chief Baron is alleged to have been found". Wikipedia ("Thomas Spring Rice") suggests that the 1st Lord was a great-grandson of Sir Stephen whilst Wikipedia ("Stephen Rice (judge)") suggests that Sir Stephen's eldest son Edward was uncle to the Stephen who was father of the 1st Lord. That supports the view that it was James's son Thomas who was the grandfather of the 1st Lord. Nevertheless, we suggest that this be viewed with some caution as, however clear Wikipedia may be, TCP would normally be expected to have identified that relationship had it been proven.

(1) BLG1886 & BLGI1912 identify Dominick as ancestor of Sir Stephen of Mount Rice, Lord Chief Baron, but do not follow his line. Note the contradiction above ## where BLG1886 & BLGI1912 identify Dominick's elder brother James as ancestor of Lord Monteagle. (2) BLG1886 indicates that the above Dominick was ancestor of the following Dominick. BLGI1912 reports the above connections (to Chief Baron Stephen and Lord Montagle) and then merely mentions the following Dominick somewhat disconnectedly. Noting that it is a little presumptuous, provisionally we show the above Dominick as father (or grandfather) of ... |
