Robert de Vere of Great Addington and Drayton (a 1166, 1176)
(1) TCP (vol X, appendix J) reports that Robert married twice, the name of the first wife (mother of Henry & William) being unknown but that of the second wife being given as Margaret, dau of Baldwin FitzGilbert. The wives we show are as reported by VCH.
(2) The IGI appears to be one of several web sites which have followed the lead of BE1883 (Vere of Oxford) which suggests that the first Vere of Great Addington was Sir Henry, 2nd son of Robert, 3rd Earl of Oxford. BE1883 goes on to report that that Sir Henry was father of Sir Robert, father of Richard who married Isabel, dau/heiress of Richard Greene of Drayton. However, that appears to be missing out several generations (possibly because it reported the gap in the wrong place, suggesting that there were some generations between the Richard who married Isabel Greene and the Sir Henry who married Isabel Tresham rather than between Sir Robert and Richard). We follow TCP & VCH.
