Families covered: Penyston of Beaconsfield, Pennyston of Cornwell, Pennyston of Deane, Penyston of Hawridge, Pennyston of Leigh, Penyston of Penyston, Peniston of Saffron Walden
(1) The name of this family appears to have derived from the Cornish words "penn", meaning the end or head of something (for land, a promontory or peninsula) and "ton", meaning enclosure or estate (same root as "town"). The name is spelt variously. BEB1841 starts with Penyston then Penestone then Peneystone. The Oxfordshire Visitation uses Penistone & Peniston. The Buckinghamshire Visitation used Pennystone & Pennyston. Somewhat arbitrarily, on this page we mostly use Penyston for the upper section and Pennyston for the lower section. (2) For the top section, the data obtained from the 'Main Sources' has been supplemented by data found in a RootsWeb site (here) which is shown in italics. |
