| (1) BP1934 shows only John's marriage to Ann Stafford, thereby indicating that she was mother of his successor. TCP names 2 wives, showing Elizabeth as mother of the 7th Lord. 'TUDOR' shows Elizabeth as mother of the 7th Lord and Anne as mother of another John. We provisionally follow that. (2) John and his successors appear to have claimed the barony of Saye despite the fact that, according to TCP, his father had renounced the claim to that barony that he obtained through his ancestress, Idonea de Saye, wife of the 3rd Lord Clinton. The barony of Saye (and Sele) was held by a junior branch of the Fiennes family to which his wife belonged. This may have been part of the reason why John and his successors sometimes used the name Fiennes. |
