Alexander Hamilton of Ballencrieff, 1st of Innerwick (d before 1454)
m. (c1381) Elizabeth Stewart (dau/coheir of Thomas Stewart, 2nd Earl of Angus)
'HamiltonHistory' (p489) suggests that there was probably at least one more generation between Alexander and the following Archibald, possibly (at least) another Alexander.
1. Archibald Hamilton, 2nd of Innerwick (d before 1486)
  m. Margaret Montgomerie (dau of John Montgomerie of Thornton)
  A. Alexander Hamilton, 3rd of Innerwick (d by 1505)
  m. Isobel Shaw (dau of John Shaw or Schaw of Sauchie)

  (A) Sir Alexander Hamilton, 7th of Innerwick (Enderwick) & Clonkine & Carrotubber, co. Cavan (d before 22.03.1574/5)

  m. Issobelle Hume
(i) Sir Alexander Hamilton, 8th of Innerwick, of Bancrieff, Sheriff of Renfrew (d before 13.09.1641)
m1. (08.1577, div 02.12.1589) Margaret Whytelaw (bur 04.1627, dau/coheir of Patrick Whytelaw of that ilk, m2. John Ker)
  (a) Sir Alexander Hamilton of Fenton & Lawfield (d 1640)
There appears to be some confusion between the generations around here. Anderson show this Alexander as dvp c1608 (HJHeraldry shows dvp c1604) with both his son Alexander (m. Isobel, dau of Sir George Home of Manderston) and his (the son's) son Alexander (wife not named by Anderson but named by HJHeraldry as Isabel, dau of James Shaw of Knockhill) being killed at Dunglas in 1640, the latter being father of Colonel Alexander (dsps, no wife named). However, 'HamiltonHistory' shows that this Alexander was killed at Dunglas in 1640 with his son as father of Colonel Alexander (dsps). It is possible that there were indeed 2 generations killed at Dunglas but that it was this Alexander and his father rather than this Alexander's son & grandson.

Anderson shows Thomas "of Orchartfield, progenitor of the Earls of Haddington" as of this generation but notes that Crawfurd says that the Earls "are probably sprung from the family of Pardosan (Pardovan), an older cadet of the house of Innerwick." We follow TSP, 'HamiltonHistory' & HJHeraldry in showing him a generation earlier.
