The undermentioned Thomas is identified as "Supposed to be son or grandson of Richard Cotton of Cumbermere". We presume to show him as one of Richard's grandsons albeit with the exact connection not being known.
  x. ?? Cotton
  a. Thomas Cotton
The following connection comes from the US Presidents web at http://users.legacyfamilytree.com/USPresidents/index.htm which shows Frances's mother as Mary Mainwaring. However, we suspect that Frances was of one of the later marriages.
  xi. Frances Cotton (b 1573)

3. Sir Richard Cotton of Werblington (Warblington) & Bedhampton, Sheriff of Hampshire (b by 1497, d 02.10.1556)
Visitation (Hampshire, 1575+1622-34, Cotton), which starts with Sir Richard and his sister Mary, supports the following.
  m. Jane Onley (d 1586, dau of John Onley of Onley Catesby)
A. Sir George Cotton of Warblington & Bedhampton (d 1609)
  m. Mary Shelley (dau of John Shelley of Michellgrove)

m1/2. Elizabeth (or Mary) Blount (sister of Sir Edward Blount and of Sir Christopher of Kidderminster)
m2/1. Elizabeth Lumley (dau of Thomas Lumley of Scarborough by Elizabeth, natural dau of Edward IV)
Visitation ends with this generation having shown Richard as married to Elizabeth Blount. It appears that 'The Baronetage of England' suggests that the mother of Richard's daughter Elizabeth was Elizabeth Lumley although this contradicts what we have seen elsewhere. Richard's successors are as reported in VCH (Hampshire, vol 3, Warblington + Bedhampton).
  a. George Cotton (dvp)
  (1) Richard Cotton of Warblington & Bedhampton

iii. Sir George Cotton (d c1613) probably of this geneartion
Sir George is not mentioned by Visitation (Hampshire) but is identified as "a younger son of .... Cotton of Warblington and Bedhampton" in Visitation (Staffordshire, 1664, 'Cotton of Beresford') which provides the following, with some support/input from Visitation (Armytage & Rylands (1912), Staffordshire, 1664-1700, 'Cotton') & Lodge's 'Peerage of Ireland' (Archdall, vol 2 (1789), 'Beresford, Earl of Tyrone', p291).
m. Cassandra MackWilliam
  a. Charles Cotton 'of London' of Ovingden, Sussex (d 08.12.1658)
  m. Olive Stanhope (dau of Sir John Stanhope of Elvaston)
Visitation suggests that Olive was Sir John's daughter by Mary Radcliffe but in fact she was Sir John's only child by his 1st wife, Olive, dau/heir of Edward Beresford of Beresford.
  (1) Charles Cotton of Beresford, Staffordshire (b 28.04.1630, bur 16.02.1686/7, poet)
Wikipedia ("Charles Cotton") suggests that Charles had 1 child (Catherine) by his 1st wife, Isabel, dau of Charles Hutchinson MP. In fact they had several children and she was sister rather than daughter of Charles.
m1. Isabel Hutchenson (dau of Sir Thomas Hutchenston (Hutchinson) of Owthorpe (not Buthorpe))
